Now, that all being said, bare in mind there are a few things to consider before buying/trying Wen:
1.) Despite what the commercial says, like all things, it doesn't work for everyone. I have talked to a few other people that have used it, and just like all shampoos; it works for some and not others. I happen to be one of the hair types it works great on.
2.) The longer and thicker your hair is, the more this will cost you. The infomercial states that every supply is by month or two months, etc, but I have talked to a few girls with very long hair who have used it, and they say that their "monthly" supply was gone in just a few uses. I happen to have short hair so my supply actually lasts, but this won't be the case for people with long hair.
3.) Be careful how much you use and unless you have long hair, do NOT use as much as directed on the back. My hair is chin length and 6-8 pumps works great from me. The back says to use 10-15 pumps, but if you use that much on short hair its a total waste of product.
4.) If you have hair that's easily weighed down or easily becomes oily; avoid using the texture balm. All the other products that came in my Wen set worked great, expect for the balm. Just a tiny bit of it made my hair look chunky, oily, and weighed down, which pretty much counteracted the fabulous results I got from the Wen shampoo itself. I'm sure the texture balm would work great for people who have thicker hair, but for people who have baby fine hair like me, its not all that great.
Just a few things to keep in mind. I really do hope the Wen system will work for you as well as it did for me.I was given the Wen kit as a gift by my mom who raved about it. I have to say, I was very skeptical at first because #1 it's an informercial, #2 some negative reviews I read, and #3 my mom and I have totally different hair (hers: fine, straight, dry, shoulder length, processed. mine: thick, wavy, long, oily at scalp but dry on ends, not heavily processed only highlighted now and then). But I tried it anyway. After the first time, I thought eh, it's o.k. but I don't see the big deal. But I used it a few more times anyway. After the 3rd usage, I started to see a very noticable differenc in shine, softness and overall health. Now, after about 2 months of using Wen (with some trial and error) I have to say that I'm a total convert! I LOVE IT SO MUCH that I have thrown out my old shampoos and conditioners. For those thinking about trying it, DO IT. But, I have to say that there are some things that no one told me that I had to learn on my own:
1. Did you read those negative reviews about Wen leaving their hair greasy? Me too. And it made me nervous. I did have a day in the beginning where my crown seemed a tiny bit greasy (as if I hadn't washed it in a few days). Here's what I learned that made all the difference. Do not try to put it on quickly and haphazardly like regular shampoo. You really have to work it in, and you really have to wash it out. I start out initially with a few pumps on concentrate solely on getting product into my roots (especially crown), around my hairline and at the nape of my neck. I really massage it in there making sure it's all the way to the roots and no hair is left uncoated. Only then to I move on to working it in to the length down the hair shaft and to the ends. I really feel like the Wen comb (or a good wide tooth comb) is essential. And then I leave it on through out the rest of my shower. Rinsing it out is the last thing I do. BE SURE to work on the rinse out as much as you did on the work in. Once again, make sure it's rinsed out of the crown and roots.
2. The different scents are not just about smell. Go to Chaz Dean's site. They explain what type of hair each scent is meant to treat. I have tried Sweet Almond Mint, Pomegranate, Lavender, and Fig. Pomegranate is my favorite by far. Just moisturizing enough without loss of body.
I went from being a total skeptic to a complete kool-aid drinking convert. I hope this review has left you with some tips that I had to discover on my own.I saw the Try Wen infomercial, ordered, and am now convinced that a person or the ordering software should be specifically asking, "What hair type are you?" in order to receive the right Wen for your hair. For 2 consecutive days I used this product package and followed the instructions, but after my hair dried each time it was completely parched and frizzy. I have thick, course, Afro hair. I need moisture!!! Especially, with a curly, comb-through texturizer in my hair. From what I understand now, I should have tried the Wen, Fig formula but how was I to know when the TV sellers push that "this product is good for all hair types?" There is no Fig package offered on the commercial, it's pushing Sweet Almond Mint, the package I ordered which smells a little mediciny, like menthol.
Great News!
While researching, I learned that Sally's Beauty Supply has their own, much cheaper version of Wen called Hair One also found right here on Amazon. Here again, you must get the right formula for your hair! I'm going to try the dry-hair formula with Olive Oil, which now, sounds about right for me. If this doesn't work, it's back to using oils or grease or styling gels, and most definitely shampoo, while I wait for the next big thing that will greatly aid in ethic hair care.
I have also been informed: Both "Wen" and "Hair One" are mainly conditioners. If treating and washing your hair and scalp without shampoo is all you're after, either Suave Conditioner or Alberto Vo5 Conditioner will do a better job because of an added cleaning ingredient. Both are under $3 each and both are found right here on Amazon, but neither contains the added ingredients which target specific hair-type needs. I do hope this is helpful.
2013 Updates -
I must revisit this review because I want to be fare to Wen. Now that I've thought about it, I love putting comb-thru texturizers in my hair which leave it in a state of not really permed but not really natural either (and without a moisturizer it is highly dry), which is probably why neither Wen or Hair One worked for me.
SIDE BAR: On the Wen website you can see a black woman getting her wet hair straightened with only a hairdryer and a round brush. No lye, no hot comb, and no grease. Fascinating!
I still disagree with Wen's statement against all shampoos which was something to the effect of, "If it's lathering it's damaging." I must give some high marks to my 2012 discovery, Head & Shoulders Shampoo also available here on Amazon. It attacks dandruff, works to prevent breakage, and promotes hair and scalp health. On my bottle (Green Apple scent), it states that it's ph balanced for everyday use even on colored or permed hair. I love the silky feel of my hair during and after cleaning. My hair and scalp are healthier. This stuff rocks!!!
And lastly, my favorite comb-thru texturizer, Elasta QP was discontinued late 2012 but The S Curl texturizer continues to give me the waves and curls I desire. This is one of the worst companies I have ever dealt with, ever! They take your money; if you do not like the product, they remain to take out "39.99" every month. I had to file a law suit in order to stop them from taking my money. I was bring my lawsuit forward, and had a bad review written by a reporter friend; than they gave me back some of my money. They still owe me about 70 bucks. "Guthy Renker" is the company that takes money and will not give it back; and when you call Chaz he does nothing! DO NOT BUY!I had really high hopes for this product after watching the infomercial. I have naturally curly hair and I'm always looking for products that will give me frizz control without weighing my hair down or making it crunchy. This product smells great, but it made my hair look greasy even without using it as a leave-in conditioner (and I don't have oily hair). It also left it twice as frizzy, regardless of which products I used after washing. My hair was definitely softer than before, but completely out of control.
The styling cream seems like it could be a decent product on its own, but beware of using with any other products as it will congeal and leave you with little gelatinous chunks in your hair!
I think that for someone with straight hair, this would probably be a decent product. It smells great all day, make your hair soft, but it just doesn't control the frizz. I can't recommend it to anyone with naturally curly hair.
