Glytone Acne Treatment Gel 2 oz.

Glytone Acne Treatment Gel 2 oz.Works very well. It's pretty drying if you use it daily. If you haven't used this product before start off slowly.

This product is really good. It has no additional ingredients that can cause irritation or additional acne. Just basic ingredients. At night, it's great because you don't have to worry that there are white streaks. During the day. I let it absorb for 15 minutes, then put a little rosewater and glycerine on (moisturizers have too many ingredients that can cause acne). The rosewater allows the blending of any white streaks and allows for my simple powder to "stick" to my skin better as I don't use liquid foundation.

Glytone Acne Treatment Gel, 10% benzoyl peroxide, is one of the better benzoyl peroxide creams that I have tried in the past 5 years.

The positives:

a. In terms of reducing and preventing acne, it is one of the most effective 10% benzoyl peroxide creams that I have ever used. It's probably the second-best I've used in terms of sheer power.

b. It is straightforward and efficient it has a short, no-nonsense list of ingredients, and it doesn't claim to do anything other than treat acne (similar creams from other brands often claim to moisturize, or contain anti-aging substances, and so on). I like the simplicity of this, because the simpler the product, the less chance there is that my sensitive skin will react badly to a random ingredient that doesn't really need to be there in the first place.

c. The tube is relatively large and lasts me a long time (I don't use much, probably a pea-sized to a dime-sized amount over my t-zone every night before bed.)

d. I had not heard of them before I first bought this product several years ago, but the company seems established and trustworthy.

The negatives:

a. This product is relatively expensive, given that it's a pretty basic product. Before I starting using it, I had been using a b.p. cream that was at most six dollars. When I used this for a couple of years, it would run me about eighteen to twenty. After I stopped using it in late 2010 because I found a product that worked even better for me, the new b.p. cream was at most six dollars.

b. I went through a number of bottles of this, and the cream in all of them had a noticably gritty texture that caused a tiny bit of pain when I applied it. After applying, I could see the clear, hard, sand-like pieces on my skin and could brush them off my face once the cream had dried. I have never experienced this with any other benzoyl peroxide product I've ever tried in my 30 years of using this stuff nightly.

[I had reviewed this cream here on Amazon two years ago (but that product listing has entirely disappeared from Amazon in the last year or so, which makes me wonder if they have stopped making this product now...), and someone made a comment on my review that if I found this Glytone gel gritty, it was clear to them that I was using way too much of it per application, but I replied that even the tiniest amount of this cream swiped across a wide area of my face would produce those mildly-uncomfortable, sand-like effects, and would leave a gritty residue that I could see and brush away.]

c. This b.p. cream was the most drying one that I've ever used. Of course, a drying effect can be a good thing for really oily skin, and you can adjust how much cream you use in order to lessen this effect. You just need to respect how strong this is, especially if you are new to this product or your face is momentarily sensitized for any reason (sunburn, rash, recently-exfoliated, or whatever).

d. Prior to this, I had used a benzoyl peroxide cream that was slightly tinted and basically vanished into my skin, but the Glytone gel left white swirls that stayed white instead of soaking in or turning translucent. That was not much of a problem for me because I only use benzoyl peroxide while I'm sleeping. If I were using it in the daytime, I think the visibility of it when dried on my skin would have been an annoyance.

As I mentioned above, two years ago I found a benzoyl peroxide 10% cream that worked even better for me than the Glytone gel. It was only about 4 or 5 dollars, it didn't have such big gritty particles in it, it dried a little more translucent, it wasn't quite as harsh/drying, yet it was just as effective against acne. It was called Panoxyl Aquagel. When I found it, I came back to Amazon and updated my reviews of benzoyl peroxide creams accordingly, to let folks know about Panoxyl Aquagel. It was most commonly available in the UK and Australia, I think, but it seemed that Panoxyl had recently expanded to the US as well.

Unfortunately, around September 2012, the company that made Panoxyl decided to stop production world-wide without any warning, so this product is now unavailable. I have enough of a supply to last me 6 more months, then I'll need to figure out what b.p. cream to use next. I could always go back to this Glytone Acne Treatment gel (if they are still making it I hope they are), and I could also try some of the substitutes that former Panoxyl users who were disappointed about its demise have mentioned on internet discussion forums -one of those is called Persagel, I think.
